Energy Healing: Ancient Practice, Modern Rest

Energy healing at Sarvanga

There are some experiences that are difficult to explain until you've felt them for yourself.

A walk in the woods after a difficult day.

The feeling of being deeply listened to.

The sense of calm that sometimes settles over us in the presence of someone kind and attentive.

For many people, energy healing falls into this category.

Some arrive curious but sceptical. Some are deeply, intuitively draw towards it. Others have experienced it before and know exactly why they keep returning. Many sit somewhere in between, simply seeking a moment of rest, reflection, or support.

Whatever brings you to it, energy healing invites us to slow down and pay attention to a part of ourselves that modern life often overlooks.

Where Did Energy Healing Come From?

Practices involving touch, intention, prayer, and subtle forms of healing can be found throughout human history.

Across cultures and continents, people have developed ways of working with the connection between body, mind, spirit, and the unseen aspects of human experience.

The form of energy healing most familiar in the West today is often Reiki, a system developed in Japan in the early twentieth century by Mikao Usui. Reiki practitioners use gentle touch or hands held just above the body while cultivating a state of presence, compassion, and focused awareness.

Other traditions have developed their own approaches, including Seichem, spiritual healing, therapeutic touch, and various forms of energetic bodywork.

While methods differ, many share a common intention: creating space for balance, restoration, and wellbeing.

What Happens During an Energy Healing Session?

A session is typically quiet, unhurried, and deeply restful.

You remain fully clothed and comfortably supported while the practitioner works with gentle touch or hands held near the body.

Many people describe feeling:

  • Deep relaxation

  • Warmth or tingling sensations

  • Emotional release

  • Mental clarity

  • A sense of peace or spaciousness

Others simply enjoy an hour where they are not expected to perform, achieve, fix, or solve anything.

There is no "correct" experience.

Each session is unique.

What Does Energy Healing Actually Do?

This is where honesty matters.

The mechanisms behind energy healing are not fully understood, at least not through the lens of modern science, and experiences vary from person to person.

Some people understand energy healing through spiritual or energetic frameworks.

Others see it as a form of deep relaxation that supports the nervous system and encourages the body's natural capacity for rest and recovery.

Many simply know that they leave feeling calmer, lighter, clearer, or more grounded than when they arrived.

At its best, energy healing is not about convincing someone to believe a particular philosophy. It is about offering an experience and allowing each person to make meaning of it in their own way.

The Importance of Ethical Practice

Like any wellbeing practice, energy healing should be offered with integrity.

A responsible practitioner recognises the limits of their role.

Energy healing is not a replacement for medical treatment, diagnosis, or professional healthcare. It should never encourage someone to ignore medical advice or delay seeking appropriate support.

An ethical practitioner creates a safe, compassionate environment where clients feel respected, informed, and empowered to make their own choices.

In many ways, this quality of presence is one of the most valuable aspects of the work.

Why Do People Book Sessions?

People seek energy healing for many reasons.

Some are navigating periods of stress, grief, or change.

Some feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or emotionally depleted.

Others are simply looking for a moment of stillness in a busy world.

Perhaps the greatest gift of energy healing is that it asks very little of us.

There is no performance.

No flexibility required.

No expectation to do anything other than arrive and receive.

A Different Kind of Rest

In yoga, we often speak about the importance of balance.

Activity and stillness.

Effort and ease.

Giving and receiving.

For many people, energy healing offers a rare opportunity to explore the receiving side of that equation.

To lie down.

To let go.

To be cared for.

To rest.

And sometimes, in a world that asks so much of us, that is healing enough.
